I think the problem with KDE 4, in general, is that it's developers decided to make a playground...for themselves. They must have all sat around contemplating all the things they, as programmers and power users, wanted. They implemented all these radical new changes but forgot one thing...to ask the users what THEY wanted. Obviously they didn't bother taking a look at the reams of usability studies commissioned by software designers over the years, including the likes of Apple. Sometimes radical change for the sake of the product is good, but when users find themselves as a fish out of water on a desktop they used to know like the back of their hands, then something went horribly awry somewhere. Even Microsoft typically implements broad sweeping changes in increments. Apple knows better than to make too many changes or disrupt the usability of Macs or their users will personally drag Steve Jobs from his office and lynch him. When Apple went from System 9 to the radical, brand new OS-X a few years ago it included a fully functioning "classic" mode to appease users and maintain compatibility & productivity. Windows, too, has included a classic mode ever since Windows XP arrived with a radical new look. KDE might have considered a "classic" mode, of sorts for KDE as well. If dyed-in-the-wool KDE users still don't like the new KDE 4 by 4.2 or 4.3 then a fork of the 3.5.9 code base will probably be inevitable.
